Its history

The Tamaskan : A unique breed combining strength and intelligence.

The Tam originated from crossbreeding between Nordic dogs, German Shepherds and various breeds. The goal was to create a wolf-alike breed while… maintaining the sociable and cooperative temperament of a dog.

In the 80s, Alaskan Malamute, Canadian Eskimo Dog, Labrador and Siberian Husky as well as Alaskan Husky were imported from Canada and the United States to Finland. They were crossed with other wolf-like dogs, then the German Shepherd was added to improve obedience and working abilities. Some blood lines also include the Greenland Dog and the Samoyed. It wasn’t until 2004 that new bloodlines incorporated the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, the American Wolfdog and the racing husky, further enhancing endurance and working strength while refining the wolf-like appearance.

The name «Tamaskan» was chosen to reflect these powerful origins. The word «Tamaska» means «Mighty Wolf» in an Algonquian dialect. «Teme» (or «Tama») refers to the wolf and added with «Maska» that evokes strength and robustness.

The first puppies officially recognized as Tamaskan were born in 2006. To ensure the rigorous development of the breed, the Tamaskan Dog Register (TDR) was created to oversee genetic selection and establish high standards in breed selection.

Then, a few members of TDR association decided to create the International Tamaskan Register (ITR) to maintain accurate records for all authentic Tamaskans. This is the pedigree database and health records for all ITR registered Tamaskan Dogs worldwide. You can find the complete list of American and European registered breeders. If the breeder is not registered with the ITR, your puppy will not be registered.
